A: Carbonization can improve durability. The heat involved in the process kills most of the sugars and sap, which makes the wood more durable. However, carbonization does not mean that the wood will not need treatment to prevent rot and insect infestation. It is important to note that the treatment varies depending on the type of wood used.

A: The flame naturally burns off the wood's surface layer, wrapping it in a thin carbon layer and shrinking its cells. This procedure greatly increases the wood's durability and resistance to moisture, fire, and insects.

A: This burning gives the tables a charred, rich brown color and strengthens the material by caramelizing the sugars in the wood. Through this heat-treating, the wood becomes less likely to crack or warp.

A: Wood petrified by calcite tends to retain more of its original organic material. Petrification begins with deposition of goethite in the cell walls, followed by deposition of calcite in the void spaces. Carbonized wood is resistant to silicification and is usually petrified by other minerals.

A: Charcoal is made from wood, heated in a low-oxygen environment, from a process called carbonization - the conversion from wood or plant material to carbon. The chemical process is called pyrolysis, where the wood composition changes due to elevated temperatures – from wood to charcoal.

A: The spontaneous breakdown or carbonization of the wood above a temperature of 280°C liberates energy and hence this reaction is said to be exothermic. This process of spontaneous breakdown or carbonization continues until only the carbonised residue called charcoal remains.
