FAQ

Q: What is the difference between dark oak planks and spruce planks?

A: Spruce wood is a slightly different shade of dark compared to dark oak. While dark oak logs are evenly dark within and on the outside, spruce logs have a light inside and dark outside. This can make for some cool decoration if players are looking to build traditional, medieval-style wooden homes.

Q: How long do oak planks take to dry?

A: Oak tends to be air dried for 1 year for every inch of thickness plus 1 year, so a board 2 inches thick will be air dried for 3 years. Once the wood is at about 30-35% moisture it is at the fibre saturation point (FSP) where only the water in the cell walls remain and all the other (free) water has evaporated.

Q: Are oak planks easy to work with?

A: Oak is a dense and hard-wearing wood which makes it very durable. However, its density can make it more challenging to work with hand tools. It is recommended to use electric tools when working with oak wood.

Q: How can one maintain and preserve oakwood surfaces?

A: To maintain and preserve oak wood surfaces, clean them regularly with a soft cloth and mild soap. Apply a furniture polish or conditioner when needed to maintain the luster and protect the wood. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage the finish.

Q: Do oak boards warp?

A: Oak generally has a large movement in service so will warp/twist/cup/bow readily with small changes in moisture (far less so with quarter sawn) and ends will split / check if boards are put too near to high heat sources.

Q: How do you seal oak boards?

A: First, flood the surface with generous amounts of boiled linseed oil. Reapply oil anywhere it's absorbed by the wood, then wipe the surfaces dry. As oil dries, it may bleed from the wood pores and harden on the surface. Wipe away these deposits every hour until you no longer notice them.
