The main softwood species used for preservative treatment include American Southern Pine (swamp pine, slash pine, longleaf pine, shortleaf pine), Douglas fir, yellow pine, Scots pine, Korean pine, Russian larch, Japanese larch, twisted pine, Caribbean pine, black pine, hemlock, spruce, radiata pine, and domestic species such as Chinese pine, Chinese fir, and larch.
1. American Southern Pine: Composed of four species of pine trees that grow in the southern United States (longleaf pine, shortleaf pine, swamp pine, and slash pine), its geographical distribution ranges from Texas to Virginia. American Southern Pine is known for its high strength, excellent bending resistance, strong nail-holding power, high wear resistance, good durability, beautiful grain pattern, and is one of the most versatile woods. Due to its unique cell structure, preservatives can penetrate to the heartwood, making it an ideal species for pressure-treated wood. American Southern Pine readily absorbs preservative chemicals under high pressure, and its high permeability protects it from moisture, decay, termites, and marine organisms, providing 50 years of protection.
2. Scots Pine (Finland, Germany, Sweden): Finland, located in the Scandinavian Peninsula, is the ideal growing area for Scots pine. Scots pine, with its long growing season, has a tall, straight, and sturdy growth habit, with a dense, strong, and beautiful grain pattern. Its low resin content and porous structure make it suitable for preservative treatment. With strong permeability, Scots pine has excellent resistance to fungi, decay, and termites, making it particularly suitable for outdoor use. It is the most popular preservative-treated wood in the European market, widely used in outdoor landscaping and industrial applications.
3. Japanese Larch: Originating from Russia; the wood is light yellow or reddish, with a uniform structure, straight and beautiful grain, and a glossy surface. It is relatively soft, with good strength and impact resistance, low resin content, and after preservative treatment, the surface has a clear, beautiful, and uniform green color, making it the ideal appearance for preservative-treated pine. 4. Korean Pine: The Korean pine, particularly the fine-grained variety from Russia, is one of the most versatile types of wood due to its low resin content, beautiful and uniform grain pattern, high strength, and good resistance to bending and abrasion. Its abundant supply and low price, coupled with its superior quality (second only to Scots pine from Northern Europe), make it a preferred choice for construction and landscaping in my country.
5. Qinghai Pine: This is an important tree species in the southwestern plateau region of my country. It has a distinct heartwood-sapwood boundary, a medium-coarse texture, and a high density among pine species, with good hardness and wear resistance, making it an ideal wood for preservative treatment.
