Solid Wood Furniture Panel Preparation Process

Solid wood paneling refers to panels made by gluing narrow, small-sized wood strips together horizontally, then sanding both sides. Patterns are then pressed onto both sides. Thin veneers are cut from planed hardwoods with good material properties. Using paneling for non-linear accessories reduces the amount of cutting required during molding, increases wood utilization, and reduces costs. However, there are issues with color variation and bond strength.

White Oak Straight Paneling

Straight paneling is made by gluing only horizontally, remaining a single piece lengthwise. Straight paneling also requires several key steps, including drying, material selection, planing, leveling, side-jointing, and sanding. 10-12 cm long boards are glued together with a special wood glue to the desired width. Compared to large pieces of solid wood that take years to grow, 10-12 cm boards can be spliced to the desired width, making them more widely used for tabletops.

Finger-jointed board

Finger-jointed board is made of multiple wooden boards, and no plywood is glued to the top and bottom. Since the vertical wooden boards are connected by serrated joints, similar to the cross-jointing of two fingers, it is called finger-jointed board. It is used as a basic material for furniture, kitchenware, wardrobes, etc. The quality of finger-jointed board depends on the annual rings of the core material. The annual rings are more obvious. The larger the annual rings, the older the tree is and the better the material. Finger-jointed board is divided into clear teeth and dark teeth. Dark teeth are the best because clear teeth are more likely to become uneven after painting. Of course, dark teeth are more difficult to process. The harder the wood, the better the board, because its deformation is much smaller and the pattern will be more beautiful.

Types of panels

[1] Short panels:

[2] Stacked panels

[3] Staggered stacked panels

Panel material

[1] Processing specifications:

The maximum width of the panel is 930mm (the panel countertop is 3' wide). The maximum width of Nanyang wood (rubber wood) must be determined according to the specifications provided by the manufacturer. The width of thick panels must be within 600mm to avoid being too heavy and causing difficulty in operation.

【2】Processing allowance:

Length: Finishing length + 20mm.

Width: Raw material width + 20mm.

Saw kerf and allowance on both sides: 9mm.

Allowance on each end after cutting: 10mm.
